Speaker

Zezong Gu, MD, PhD

Tenured Professor

Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences at the University of Missouri (MU) School of Medicine, USA

Speech Title:

Primary Blast Injury of the Brain: Translational Insights in the Development of Biomarkers

About the speaker:

Research of Gu’s lab interests in aging and neurodegenerative diseases including traumatic brain injury (TBI) on redox and proteolytic signal transduction. Dr. Gu serves as the site PI for the interagency resource multi-institutional consortium — PRECISE-TBI (PREClinical Interagency reSearch re-sourcE-TBI) for elevating rigor, reproducibility, transparency, and translation in preclinical TBI studies. Dr. Gu’s research has been funding by NIH, DOD/CDMRP programs, and VA and has been produced 80+ peer-reviewed scientific articles and trained total over 40 people worldwide. Currently, Dr. Gu serves voluntarily as President (2021-2023) of the Chinese Neurotrauma Scholar Association (CNSA) and in the Board of Directors of the Chinese American Society for Mass Spectrometry (CASMS).

Dr. Firas H. Kobaissy, PhD

Professor, Department of Neurobiology & Associate Director CNMB

Morehouse School of Medicine, USA

Speech Title:

The Promise of Mitoquinone in Ameliorating Behavioral Deficits and Neuropathological Changes in an Experimental Model of TBI

About the speaker:

Dr. Firas H. Kobaissy received a Ph.D. in molecular Neuroscience from the University of Florida (Gainesville) under the direction of Dr. Kevin K. Wang and Dr. Mark S. Gold. Most of his research focused on brain injury due to mechanical insult or due to drug abuse neurotoxicity using rat model. Dr. Kobaissy utilizes the state of the art proteomics tools to investigate cell death mechanisms involved in different brain insults. In his Ph.D., Dr. Kobaissy utilized the controlled cortical impact (CCI) rat model to evaluate protein dynamics after acute brain injury. In his Post- doctoral training, he translated his work to study the proteomics changes involved in drug abuse particularly in methamphetamine and MDMA. Dr. Kobeissy is the author of more than 150 articles, reviews, and book chapters along with three international patents. He is a tenured professor and associate director for the Center for Neurotrauma, Multiomics & Biomarkers (CNMB) of Department of Neurobiology & Neuroscience institute, Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), Atlanta, Georgia USA.

Session Chair

Jiepei Zhu, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor

Department of Anesthesiology & Affiliate of Anatomy and Cell Biology & NNBR

University of Florida, College of Medicine

About the Session Chair:

Dr. Jiepei Zhu is an assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and the Department of Anatomy & Cell biology, College of Medicine, University of Florida. Dr. Zhu received his PhD in the department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Dr. Zhu’s research is focusing on the various animal models of traumatic brain injury (TBI), which include fluid percussion injury (FPI), controlled cortical impact (CCI) as well as Closed head injury and blast injury models. Dr. Zhu is familiar with the anatomic structures of the central nervous system in rodent and the rodent neuro-behavioral assessment to test neuro-motor function and cognitive function after TBI with therapeutic intervention. Dr. Zhu also has expertise in immunohistochemistry biomarkers staining and analysis. Currently, as a co-investigator, Dr. Zhu has participated the research projects funded by NIH, department of veteran’s affairs (VA) and DoD (Department of Defense).
